Tasty Indian Bistro

The Scott Road corridor serves as the border between Surrey and North Delta. On almost every block you’ll find an Indian restaurant if not 2 or 3 all with amazing authentic dishes and great people but there’s something missing that would make them appeal to the masses. Tasty Indian Bistro, located at 8295 120th street (Scott Road) which is on the Delta side (damn, could’ve been a Surrey shoutout). offers décor that is stunning and very unexpected.

As you approach the front entrance you can tell this isn’t your usual Indian joint, there’s a large well decorated patio and some very expensive looking polished stone under your feet. Once inside you’re greeted by a modern warm restaurant with dramatic lighting and high quality finishes throughout. Sadly I didn’t stay long because I had ordered take-out but I’ll be back soon to see if the presentation of the food lives up to the décor.

I ordered some plain Jasmine rice, regular naan, garlic nann, some vegetarian samosas, butter chicken and lamb korma. Everything was top shelf, the samosas are just like the ones my high school friends used to bring for lunch back in my Surrey high school days. Both naans were fantastic, the garlic naan was mild enough that it didn’t overpower the bread as is the case in other Indian places. The butter chicken (somewhere Vikram Vij is reading this cursing butter chicken…) was tremendously good, so rich. with a subtle heat that seems to be left out of butter chicken these days. The lamb korma was orgasmic, the lamb was so perfect I cried a little and the sauce is so decadent, it’s a perfect combo. Also my wife “thinks” she doesn’t like lamb so I got to eat it all!

If you like Indian food but want a more upscale dinning experience this is the place for you. The prices are very reasonable and comparable to other less swanky Indian restaurants. Go check them out!

Siddartha’s Kitchen on Commercial Drive

I recently discovered VANEATS and their excellent dining packages. The nutshell of how it works: you buy a dining package from their website for a restaurant with a set menu (usually a couple of options) and redeem the voucher for said meal. These locales have been tested and videotaped (yes, they have entertaining videos posted of their dining experiences) so you don’t have to take any chances.

I bought one for Siddartha’s Kitchen on Commercial Drive. It is very comfortable, I sat in a plush black, velvet chair and handed over my dining voucher. I may have been the envy of the two ladies sitting across from me (or I’m just really into myself and that’s what I percieved) because I could feel them watching me as each course arrived. Yep, that’s right, today I indulged in a three course lunch.

I started with a tasting plate of chicken tikka masala, vegetable pakora, and prawns. I loved the coconut mango sauce that the prawns were sitting in, so much so that I dipped the pakora in it, too. I loved the savoury flavours combined with the mild fruity flavours of mango and coconut, neither was overpowering.

Mmmmmmm sauce….

The main dish of the meal consisted of baigan barta, rice, butter chicken, and fresh naan with onion and cilantro . I wasn’t crazy about the baigan barta (eggplant) because the flavours were a bit of a let down from the starter plate and the texture was mushy, but I did enjoy the butter chicken and the naan. I loved the creaminess of the sauce, but felt that there were very limited chicken pieces. No matter, I sopped up most of the sauce with my naan bread until I could fit no more food into my tummy.

Don’t be fooled, there is a lot of food in those bowls.

Warm and chewy with fresh ingredients

I did manage to fit in the ras malai, a syrupy laden cottage cheese dessert, surprisingly. It was a lot sweeter than I was expecting, but it was delicate at the same time. It had more coconut and mango flavours which tied the meal together.

I was grateful that dessert was small, I was so full from everything else!

My overall thoughts? I liked it. I probably wouldn’t go there for lunch again purely for the fact that my lunch break is only an hour and I was there for an hour and a half, but the food itself was good. It’s on Commercial Drive between 4th and 5th, I think you should check it out!

Palki Restaurant Palki Passion Package with VANEATS.ca!!

These VANEATS.ca dining packages just keep getting better, this time I was invited to try the #PalkiPassion package at Palki Restaurant on Commercial Drive in Vancouver. I love Indian food, I grew up and still live in Surrey where there’s a ton of great Indian food and I ate a lot of samosas and butter chicken at my friends houses when I was a kid so I feel extra qualified to judge good Indian cuisine. Palki did not disappoint and this is easily the best value I’ve seen in a package, at $14 this is a lot of food! Lots of good food makes Scott happy.

The package is billed as a 7 course meal but everything comes at once, 5 items on a smoking hot plate called the Palki Platter and the butter chicken and naan come separately. I actually started off with some Pakoras with a mint chutney and a tamarind chutney and they were excellent but they aren’t part of the package. The items that come on the sizzling plate are Chicken Tikka, a Tandoori Prawn, a Vegetable Samosa, a Lamb Barrah Kebab and Murg Malai Tikka (also chicken) with some green pepper for garnish.

The Lamb was amazing, so flavourful and tender. It’s a portion of a rack roasted in a Tandoor oven (as are most meats in this package). Both chicken dishes were also really tasty but my favourite was the Murg Malai Tikka which is marinated in sour cream and spices before being roasted. The Prawn was good but looked a little lonely all by itself so I had to eat it first… The Samosa was pretty good, maybe not the best I’ve ever had but I’ve had some incredible samosas in my day. This one was still quite good, a little more seasoning perhaps. The Green Peppers, although not listed as a course, were fantastic taking in the flavours of all the ingredients on the platter.

Now to the star of the show, The Butter Chicken. I LOVE BUTTER CHICKEN! It has to be in my top 3 favourite foods so finding a really great butter chicken is a big deal to me. This Butter Chicken is a big deal. Not only does it look absolutely dead sexy as it bubbles away in it’s candle powered warming dish with it’s swirl of  seductive cream just waiting to be mixed in. Whoa, I just blacked out there for a minute! Thankfully it tastes as good as it looks, rich and creamy with a depth of flavour that only Indian sauces can conjure up, it’s like magic in a bowl. Add in the tender chicken and Onion Cilantro Nana bread to soak up the sauce and you have pure food heaven.

All this for $14 people, this one’s a sure thing. If you’re not into spicy food or have never tried Indian food this is the perfect opportunity as the spices are very well balanced throughout the meal and the flavours are very accessible to the inexperienced palate.

Go to VANEATS.ca to check out this and other great dining packages!!!

Naan Wraps

I finally got to try Naan Wraps after missing them at 400 Burrard due to their limited schedule at that location. Wow!!! The smell wafting down the street from the authentic Tandoori oven is amazing! I love Indian food, I live in Surrey and grew up eating home made Samosas, Lamb Korma and Butter Chicken from my friends families kitchens. Needless to say I know good Indian food.

First up was a newer menu item, a hollow bun filled with a choice of savory goodness, in my case it was Butter Chicken. The buns were really fresh and soft and soaked up some of the sauce and the chicken was tender, juicy and delicious. The bun isn’t traditional but the Butter Chicken sure is and it’s great! Next up I had the Tandoori Chicken Wrap. Naan bread is so freaking good, so to use it as a wrap for something as awesome as Tandoori Chicken should be illegal, I mean it’s just not fair to other food trucks! Rumor has it (actually Jay from Nann Wraps told me) that they’re going to be testing out some new menu items and some other top secret goodies that I’m not at liberty to discuss, it’s all very secret agent like and awesome sounding. Follow them on Twitter here to keep up on these changes ant to find out where they’ll be if you’re looking for some tasty South Asian eats!
