Arturo’s Mexico To Go

Sunny days, short shorts and street food, a good day in my opinion. The short shorts were on other people of course as elevator repairmen have to wear pants. A couple of days at Pricewaterhouse Coopers Place (250 Howe street) meant I was within smelling distance of Arturo’s Mexico To Go, another of Vancouver’s street food vendors. Taco trucks are a regular sight on the streets of LA and have a reputation for being very hit and miss. I had my fingers crossed that Arturo’s would be as good as the rest the street food I’ve had since I started writing this blog.

Arturo’s is run out of a trailer which is spacious compared to any other street food setup I’ve seen, wide and easy to get around. It makes me think that this trailer would be better suited for something more labor intensive and complicated than tacos and burrito’s. I had a Sirloin Beef Burrito ($7) and the Tacotino ($4). Being a sunny day the lineup was long but moved along quickly. I’m not one to normally carry cash so I appreciate street food vendors who offer debit/credit but it really slows down the payment process and I make a point of always paying in cash so I don’t hold up the line.

The food, the Tacotino, rotisserie pork with chipotle and lime sauce in a tortilla was not what I was expecting. The meat had a strange texture that was a mixture of crunchy/chewy/dry which was overpowered by onion and chipotle flavors. The taste stayed in my mouth for hours after lunch even after some water and a tictac. The Burrito was much better, the beef was tasty and the other fillings were nicely seasoned. I especially liked the use of corn which added a nice summery sweetness to the dish.

One winner, one loser. I’ve been told the Gringas are quite good, I’ll have to try them next time I’m in the neighborhood.

La Brasserie Street

Everyone knows how much I like street food and a sunny Friday means that eating some is an inevitability. La Brasserie has recently launched a mobile food trailer and has nabbed a prime spot at the corner of West Georgia and Granville near the City Centre Canada Line station. I’ve heard great things from my fellow blue collar workers who have tried the Brass Chicken Sandwich and I couldn’t wait to sink my teeth into one!

Being the first sunny day in some time the wait was a little on the long side but that’s a good thing for street food vendors. La Brasserie Street’s Twitter account claimed 45 person line ups that day, awesome! I ordered my sandwich and payed my $7 and patiently waited as the smell of delicious chicken filled the streets. There’s an added bonus at this location, while you wait for your food you can watch a very spunky little 3 legged dog chase a small rock that his owner throws for him. Seems like a good scam as tons of people were giving him money… Anyways, back to the food. After receiving my sandwich I loaded it up with hot Dijon mustard and took a big bite. My face appeared from the sandwich looking like a tennis ball that had been left out in the rain, covered in gravy and mustard. I’m sure there were many hot ladies walking back to their offices who thought “who’s that hot bearded elevator guy with the messy face?” It’s ok to look ladies but I’m taken.

The sandwich was really good, beer braised rotisserie chicken, rich and well seasoned chicken gravy and crispy onions on a fresh buttermilk bun. Very simple food is amazing when done right. This ain’t no Sous Vide truffle infused gastro wonderchild, it’s a really good chicken sandwich at a good price. That’s what street food is all about and La Brasserie Street totally gets it.

Thank You.

This has been one crazy year, easily the most rewarding of my life. I learned a lot, met some great people and became a father. I have learned that Fish Sauce tastes awesome on everything, Bristol Palin lists one of her qualifications for paid public appearances as “unwed mother” and at the risk of upsetting most women and teenage girls I have discovered that the true message of the Twilight book series is that all men are monsters who crave young flesh. That last tidbit was revealed to me on a new TV show called Community staring a much older looking than anticipated Chevy Chase, and it’s really not that funny. Well done Stephanie Meyer, you have solved the mystery of men once and for all.

As the year approaches its end I feel like I have really found a rhythm in my life, one that has really never been there before. I have a great family, wonderful friends, a good job and the coolest dog ever who is soon to have a little sister, sorry Cooper but you knew it was coming. To top off all of that awesomeness I have THIS. This blog has given me a release for some creative energy that my day job can’t provide. I have met some cool people, found some great food treasures and figured out that I am a total social media junkie. I am hopelessly addicted to Twitter and I find myself scanning my Twitter feed looking for tweets from my favorites. They include @therealcabbie, @SandraOldfield, @jminter, @hummingbird604, to name a few. I also have some ACTUAL PEOPLE I KNOW who I follow on Twitter such as @HeatherVince, @eye_candy_photo and @dylan_redekop.

I love the local blogging scene and without my old pal Dylan I wouldn’t be doing this at all. His Blog, More Than A Feeling Music, was my inspiration and I still read every post he writes, really good stuff. My friend Erika was inspired somewhat similarly by me! Totally flattered and I think she is an amazing photographer. Her blog, Eye Candy Photoworks, has some great stuff, including some shots of yours truly and my little girl. There are some other local blogs that I read on a regular basis as well such as Miss 604 by Rebecca Bollwitt and Hummingbird 604 by Raul Pacheco-Vega. I have discovered that this city has infrastructure to support freelance writers and bloggers in the form of co-working spaces like The Network Hub.

This year has been full of great food discoveries like The Roaming Dragon, Argo Cafe, Nuba, Benton Brothers Fine Cheese, Five Guys Burgers & Fries and Michi Waffle & Espresso Bar. I have received great feedback about my posts from all over the world and I am continually evolving my writing style and content to try to make it as appealing and user-friendly as possible. I have also launched a new company, Ninety3 Days Media, to oversee this blog and act as a promotional arm for a book I’m writing about my daughter Hayley.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me by reading this blog or following me on Twitter or Facebook. It still amazes me that people take time out of their busy lives to read what I write. This will be my last post this year so that I can take it easy over Christmas so whatever and wherever you are celebrating this holiday season I hope it is fantastic and I look forward 2011 and everything it will bring.

Cheers,

Scott.

Movember, fighting prostate cancer with the power of a moustache.

This Movember, the month formerly known as November I’ve decided to donate my face to raising awareness about prostate cancer.  My donation and commitment is the growth of a moustache for the entire month of Movember, which I know will generate conversation, controversy and laughter.

I’m doing this because 4,400 men die of prostate cancer in Canada each year and one in six men will be diagnosed during his lifetime. This is a cause that I feel passionately about and I’m asking you to support my efforts by making a donation to Prostate Cancer Canada.

This year my cousin Kurt and I are stepping it up a notch by not shaving our heads, which have a cul-de-sac appearance, for the entire month leaving us with a sweet horseshoe up top and an even sweeter moustache warming our upper lip.

To help, you can either:

*  Click this link http://ca.movember.com/mospace/31977/ and donate online using your credit card or PayPal account
* Write a cheque payable to Prostate Cancer Canada, referencing my name or Registration Number 31977 and mailing it to: Prostate Cancer Canada, Suite 306 145 Front Street East, Toronto, ON M5A 1E3, Canada.

All donations are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.

For more details on how the funds raised from previous campaigns have been used and the impact Movember is having please visit: http://ca.movemberfoundation.com/research-and-programs.

Thank you in advance for helping me to support men’s health.

Office Life

How many of you have ever worked in an office? Now out of those people, how many have worked in a Head office of some sort? If you work for a large company there is probably some sort of cafeteria, and if the company is “employee centered” this cafeteria might even be half decent.

Take for example my former life as a Sales Manager for a very large electronics retailer. Their Canadian Corporate Headquarters (CHQ) is located here in Vancouver. Their cafeteria had everything from soup and sandwiches to a sushi bar, made to order pasta bar, Starbucks coffee, steak, chicken, salads. You name it, it was there. I looked forward to the days when we had meetings at CHQ, not so much for the meetings but for the food. Maybe that explains why I’m not there any more? It wasn’t the most amazing I’ve ever had but it was good and it was cheap, nothing over $10.

Every now and then in the current wrench turning portion of my life I get the opportunity to visit these giant ant farms and fix the things that people who work there take for granted, like not having to take the stairs to the eighteenth floor. This week is one of those times and the food at this particular building is better than most.

Do I miss the days of corporate life? The days of being in charge and having a great team of people to work with, being a role model and clawing my way to the top? Sometimes I do, but then I remember the hours I worked and my days off being spent glued to my Blackberry. Somehow it was enjoyable at the time, it must have been the people I worked with.

Being a very proud new dad has made me realize that life is too short to be consumed by your job. I already regret every second I am away from my daughter. Work is a means to an end, and that end is providing a life for my family where they want for nothing but still appreciate what it means to work for what you have.

So today when I head down to the giant corporate cafeteria for lunch I will enjoy the food and marvel at what some people think passes for business attire, the whole time knowing that I have it so much better than all of them. After all the reason companies pour so much money into their CHQ’s is to make the hours seem more bearable. They can’t fool me anymore, the real world is where I have found true happiness.
