Fear not, I am still alive! A few months ago I started a YouTube channel, youtube.com/wflbc. I’m 19 videos into the world of filmmaking and I am hopelessly addicted.
It’s a lot of the same things you’re used to seeing here.
Food stuff (trust me, there’s food in this one)
Everything WFLBC has always been about, now with 100% more Scott’s face! I mean, who isn’t on board with that?!
I would love it if you’d subscribe to my channel and/or give some of my videos a like. It helps the channel grow and pushes my videos up the search results. I will be posting here as well. Brief overviews of my weekly video with an imbedded link so you can watch them here if YouTube isn’t your jam.
Stay tuned for more content, I post 1 video per week. This week I went underwear shopping. Not the most glamourous video but it was fun to make.
You may have noticed I haven’t been posting much to wflbc.com lately. Maybe you didn’t notice, I won’t lose any sleep over it. The fact is this site has become a bit of a chore. I used to look forward to writing and I used to worry if I hadn’t posted anything for more than 2 or 3 days. Before I wrote about Famoso Pizzeria last week I hadn’t written anything for over a month. I didn’t know it had been that long until I logged in to upload some photos. I still enjoy writting and I don’t plan on shutting it down but I’m not going to post unless I really feel like it. There are a few new adventures that occupy most of time now and I’d like to share them with you.
The first is civic politics. I am quite active on social media through @SurreyIsTheBomb breaking down mayoral candidates platforms through inappropriate memes and asking them uncomfortable questions. Their responses have shown their true character and I have enjoyed every minute of it. Civic politics impacts the people of a city more so than any other level of government. I’m not going to tell you who to vote for but I hope you research the candidates and cast an informed vote on November 15th.
The other thing that’s become a true passion is photography. Street and architecture photography are my main focus but I love taking pictures of anything and everything. I share my pictures through Flickr and Instagram, Please follow if you like what you see. Back in May my family bought me a Fuji X-A1 mirrorless camera for my birthday. This little beauty cost $399 and came with a 16-50mm OIS lens. It’s small, light, and very versatile. I inherited some old lens from my mom and I use them on this camera with the help of inexpensive lens adapters. I take a lot of pictures with my smartphone too. It’s a Nexus 5 and I love it. I’m able to share this time with my daughter and teach here about her city, the environment, and photography. Here’s a few of my favourites from Instagram and Flickr.
Does this mean I’m not going to write about restaurants any more? No way! I love food and I plan on writing about it on my terms. I opt out of most menu tasting invites or new restaurant previews I get invited to these days. They don’t offer a fair view of the subject, it’s all the absolute best that you’ll ever get in those situations which is quite often not reality. I do the ones that interest me and I go as an individual diner but mostly I just go out and eat without anyone knowing I’m there and write about it without the guilt or influence of free food and drink. That being said I am going to a beer launch and a vodka/gin launch this week… I am human after all. You can still follow me on Twitter @WFLBC, but please don’t turn into a creepy stalker, ok?
Thanks for reading. Remember to vote. Take pictures of cool stuff. Include your loved ones in activities you’re passionate about.
As you may or may not know being a blogger has some perks. Depending on your subject matter and/or your popularity the perks can be pretty awesome. Based on perks alone what field would you choose to blog about if given the choice?
If you choose “other” tell me what field you would choose in the comment section.
2012 sucked, plain and simple. Don’t get me wrong, I have a lot to be thankful for and most of the problems I encountered over the year have worked out for the better or they’re far enough behind me that I can look at them and smile instead of wanting to punch people in the throat. There is one thing that will never get better though, the loss of Cooper my wonderful dog. He is profoundly missed around my house and I will never forget all of the things he helped me get through, never judging me, never too busy to listen and always ready with a smelly dog kiss and a wagging tail.
Looking ahead is tough but I’ve never really laid out goals for myself and I have a few things I want to accomplish this year. First off I want to find some time and some funding to work on a book I’ve been chipping away at for a couple of years. I’m launching a crowd sourced funding campaign early in the new year to see if I can actually make it a reality. The book is about my personal journey during the birth of my daughter and how fathers are treated and viewed in a NICU setting. Other dads need to know that someone has been there before them and there is reason to have hope that your child will make it. If I don’t reach my fundraising goal, which is $50000 in 120 days, I’m going to donate every dollar to Variety BC.
Next up I want to get involved in Social Media Marketing. There are some amazing local businesses in the Surrey/Langley area that aren’t capitalizing on their current popularity by using social media to promote themselves. I’m going to be very picky when it comes to clients as I want to ensure I can give them the results they want and also maintain a regular Monday – Friday job.
I posted earlier this week about getting back in shape and this is very important to me. It’s not a “resolution”, it has to be a complete lifestyle change. Eating better, using the personal training sessions I was given as a gift to their full potential and dropping a few bad habits are the only way I’ll succeed. Sorry bacon, you’ll be seeing my face a lot less now.
I think a new tattoo is in my future as well. I got my first one this year and I love it. So many people told me that tattoos are addictive and they were all totally right. All I need is time to think about what I want and where I want it but once I decide you can follow along on Twitter, I’ll post pics before, during and after.
The most important thing I do this year will be making sure my family comes before anything else. I lost sight of that last year and almost lost everything I love. I’m very thankful that things are heading in the right direction and can’t wait to see my daughter learn and grow in 2013 and beyond. As always you can follow me on Twitter (@WFLBC) and on Facebook (Facebook.com/WFLBC). Also I hear my Superfantastic co-blogger Rochele is planning to write some more for WFLBC and I think that’s awesome because she’s awesome! Check out her Resolutions for 2013 in her post at StopDropandRo.com!
Happy New Year everyone and thank you so much for your support and continued interest in my haphazard adventures.
